A few more introductions, and a message from Dr. Hal

I received a couple e-mails since my last post. First, a couple introductions from Ariel:

"Hello, my name's Ariel. I was born in Omaha, Nebraska, graduated from high school at Bennington and am a junior at Dana majoring in art education. I love to laugh and have fun. I like to talk and make people feel special because they are. I have a small family and still live with my parents in Blair. My birthday is August 25."

She was also kind enough to send along Jen's intro:

"Hi, my name is Jennifer. I live in Hawaii now with my husband in the military. I was born and raised in Nebraska. I graduated high school from Arlington. I love art like crazy and love to talk and make people think about what I have to say. LOL. I have a great time with everyone, love my family."

And a photo of them both... (Ariel on left, Jen on the right.)

Finally, here is a message from Dr. Hal.

Greetings and welcome to the Dana to Thailand Discovery Course blog site.  I am honored and feel lucky to introduce what I think is going to be a great group of future young teachers to a country I have grown very fond of over numerous visits and to my many Thai friends who will be watching out for our students and helping them adjust to a very different culture.  Prior to this program, these schools had never experienced a foreign visitor on their campuses, and certainly, the students had never spoken to a farang.

We've got lots of tremendous experiences planned for the next four weeks.  I hope it's going to be a good balance of hard work, new experiences, learning, teaching, and making good friends among people of a very different culture.  I can assure you the Thai host schools and host families have been looking forward to our arrival almost as much as our Dana students have, and I think all will be in good care.

Meanwhile, it won't be all hard work..  There's going to be some time out to play also, since our Thai hosts are eager to introduce us to their beautiful "land of smiles."  So we'll spend some time exploring the more rural areas of southern Thailand's beaches and  islands, as well as make a quick trip to the north of Thailand to visit the beautiful city of Chiang Mai.

I appreciate very much the enthusiasm and support that I have experienced from the Dana College education department.  Especially, Dr. Dani Lagwig for all her coordinating to get this project moving forward, and Professor Maureen Bock who has bravely stepped forward to work with me and will be traveling with us and helping out in a big way with the in - school teaching and learning supervisionof students.  And finally, to Brooke Fencl, for stepping up and being our blog site administrator.

Our small group of staff and students invite you to visit this site frequently, and will do our best to update it regularly, if not daily.  If, in the case of an emergency, you need to contact any of us, my cell phone number is 0800677804.  Thailand country code is 66.
